When You’re Too Tired to Dream Bigger—but Still Want To

getting started nurse entrepreneurs

Have you ever felt so exhausted by your nursing job that even dreaming of something new feels like too much effort? You’re not alone. At mid-year, especially, many nurses find themselves burned out, discouraged, and wondering if it’s too late to make a change.

But here’s the truth: It’s not too late. And it’s not too early. In fact, this moment—this very moment of fatigue mixed with longing—might be the exact right time to start.

When the Dream Feels Distant

Maybe you once imagined yourself launching a business, becoming a writer, or stepping into a career that felt creative and autonomous. But then life happened. Shifts piled up. Energy got drained. The idea of creating something new got pushed aside by the reality of charting, staffing shortages, and barely having time to eat lunch.

Still, the desire lingers.

Even when you're tired, that small voice whispering "what if?" doesn’t go away. And that’s important.

You Don't Have to Hustle to Start

One of the biggest myths about career change is that it requires a massive, hustle-fueled effort. But for tired nurses like us, that's not realistic. The good news is: You can move toward your dream gently, one tiny step at a time.

Here are a few small-but-powerful actions you can take today:

  • Read one article about freelance writing (like this one).
  • Follow a nurse writer on LinkedIn and see what they're up to.

These actions take five minutes or less, but they plant a seed.

Fatigue Is a Signal, Not a Stopping Point

Feeling tired doesn’t mean you’re unmotivated. It means you’ve been pushing through for a long time without the rest, recognition, or support you deserve.

And sometimes, fatigue is the very thing that leads us to finally make a change. As one RN2writer student put it: “I was too tired to keep going the way I was. That’s what made me finally take the leap.”

If your body and spirit are telling you it’s time for something different, listen. Your energy will return when your daily work aligns with your values and creativity again.

You Deserve to Dream (Even if You’re Not Sure How)

It’s okay if your vision is fuzzy. You don’t have to know exactly what your dream looks like in order to begin. All you need is:

  • A tiny bit of curiosity
  • A whisper of willingness
  • A belief that something better might be possible

That’s enough.

Many of our writers started with nothing more than a sense that "there has to be more than this." That spark led them to send one email, take one course, or write one sample. And now they’re writing for hospitals, health tech companies, and magazines—from home.

Start Where You Are

Not where you wish you were. Not where you think you should be.

Right here. With your experience. Your fatigue. Your secret hope.

Because you don’t need more credentials. You don’t need to quit your job today. You just need to listen to that part of you that still wants something more.

You don’t have to feel fully ready to begin. You just have to begin.
