White papers in healthcare and life sciences typically run anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 words, though longer versions are not unusual. They are structured documents with defined sections: an executive summary, a problem statement, background and context, a discussion of solutions or findings, and recommendations or conclusions. They almost always include citations, often in APA or AMA format, which is unusual in most content marketing writing.

The tone is objective and expert, not promotional. A white paper that reads like a brochure has failed at its job. The goal is to demonstrate authority and build trust, not to close a sale directly.
